Alair Homes

As autumn chill settles into southern Ontario, a warm, welcoming home with fresh-baked smells and splashes of fall colors inside and out is very appealing. Is it possible to create a cozy home this fall without a major remodel? It certainly is, and these trends and tips for fall decorating will help you add the seasonal charm everyone will enjoy.

Welcome Fall and Friends with Outdoor Decorating

Your front door and stoop or porch are focal points for neighbors strolling by and friends paying a visit. These fall front door decorating ideas will get your creative juices flowing:

  • Corn stalks, straw bales, ornamental corn, pumpkins, gourdes, stacked wood and other classic autumn decorations
  • Mums in warm red, gold and orange lining a walkway or adorning stairs
  • Large planters or urns filled with a cornucopia of fall produce
  • A natural wreath of pinecones, acorns, a small maple branch still holding fall-tinted leaves, wheat stalks with robust heads of grain
  • Any of these items gilded or painted with gold and silver

These fall decorating items are available from Apple Land Station, Crunican Orchards and other farm stores in the London area.

Create a Cozy Interior That’s Trendy Too

Here are four interior decorating trends that feel “just right” for fall.

1. Shelves and Collections

A standing bookshelf or built-in shelves decorated with collections is a trend Lynn Byrne of Decor Arts Now calls the “curated look.” Gather a group of items you like to collect. Popular options include dishes and bowls, woven baskets, figurines, ornaments on stands, small wood carvings, glassware, antique tools and leather-bound books, and all can be found in tones fit for the season.

2. Color Contrasts in Light and Dark

Layered shades of white and beige is a hot decorating style. Those light colors on walls, upholstery, tablecloths and area rugs create a backdrop ideal for photographs, prints, knickknacks, throw pillows, wreaths and baskets featuring seasonal red, amber, orange and brown. Designer Traci Zeller is touting dark, even black, backdrops for those fall-colored accessories, and the effect is just as fabulous. It’s all about personal taste whether your decorating canvas is light or dark.

3. Pillows and Throws

Designer Claire Paquin says, “Fall is about comfort and warmth and curling up on the sofa with a great book or a cup of tea.” Brian Patrick Flynn agrees and suggests faux-fur throws and soft knit pillows as a “trend-savvy” tip for cooler weather, especially when the pillows feature autumn colors and designs.

4. Reclaimed Wood

Beautiful items are being made with repurposed barn siding, wood doors, flooring, pallets and more. Reclaimed wood tabletops and countertops are gorgeous but costly. Wall decorations, signs, maps and other unique décor offer more variety at a lower cost. Their warmth and rustic charm are a lovely touch this season.
