Moving into a new home means a clean slate, but years later we often are faced with the accumulation of stuff. Let’s face it clutter can easily take over. Most likely your clutter has you losing sight of the control and harmony you crave.

Take the time to tackle those corners, countertops, drawers, and closets that can so easily become a catchall. It’s common that the highest traffic areas of our homes are the most mismanaged and in need of the most attention. Family entry areas can become dumping grounds for school bags, soccer balls, wet mitts, store returns, and library books. How about the kitchen corner that holds the coupons, gift cards, receipts, school letters, kids artwork, grocery lists, phone chargers, cards, and fifty other odds and sods? And then there’s the desk. Overrun and consumed by school photos to order, bills to pay, piles of papers to file, and more artwork. Not to mention all the projects you plan to accomplish when you feel organized enough to tackle them.

Take Control of Clutter Before it Takes Control of You

Instead of being overwhelmed by it all and putting it off for another day, start today with reasonable goals. Write a list. Tackle a small area at a time and do it right. Find a proper home for things so you don’t end up with catchall areas that grow into unmanageable piles…”a place for everything, and everything in its place.” Rearrange. Try moving a chair, the sofa or a plant. Switch up the décor. View your room with a fresh perspective. Chances are that what goes in one room, will also work in another. Rework your storage; it can always be improved. Purge. Don’t be afraid to purge. Purging can have an extremely freeing effect. Recycling, repurposing, trashing, or donating is a great way to refresh and shed new light on any area. You will be amazed how cleaning out a closet, or clearing out your file folders can lift your spirits.
