This total transformation renovation in Strathcona County, Alberta is a perfect example of why we describe our home builds and renovations as completely custom.

This acreage embodies the individuality of the homeowners who were very much involved in the collaboration of the home’s design and build. From a custom spiral staircase requested by the homeowner’s daughter to animal imprints in the concrete staircase to a concrete bathroom countertop that displays the homeowner’s antique arrowhead collection, this home is unlike any other in how many custom elements were introduced.

We invite you to take a pictorial tour of this amazing acreage home below, and learn more about the story of this total transformation.

BEFORE

The original bungalow was removed from the foundation and sold for reuse, which meant we were able to avoid putting materials into the landfill and someone else was able to use the existing structure. A win for the environment and win for the new owners!

We were able to build the new home up and out from the existing foundation, which again saved on materials and costs for the project. Any sound foundation that can be reused can significantly offset the total cost of the home renovation or rebuild.

AFTER

Alair homes edmonton after The completely custom grand staircase is 15 feet of total elevation change from the lower side walk to the front door. Comprised of solid charcoal concrete, the staircase features Cut Stone Live edge risers and a textured surface.
alair homes edmonton after The house was built up and out from the original foundation, which saved the homeowners money that they could invest into other areas of the home. All the exterior wood features are made from solid Fir from Vancouver Island.
alair homes edmonton living room The living room on the main floor features a custom mantle with Fir from Vancouver Island and cultured stack stone. The flooring was made from engineered hand-scraped oak hardwood.

In the corner by the window and fireplace rests a rare Diamond Willow tree, which was lovingly sanded and tooled by the homeowner’s brother for display in the home. More than 100 hours of labour went into this unique feature, which we built onto a stand to create a striking focal point in the room.

alair homes edmonton rafters This home was truly a collaborative effort with the homeowner whose expertise is in wood. We welcomed this expertise and we ensured wood was a staple in the exterior and interior design. The homeowner was onsite with our team regularly and he personally stained the beams shown in this photo. The beams were built to wrap around structural columns, but designed to look as though they are part of the home’s structure.
alair hoems edmonton kitchen The kitchen—the heart of this home—carries through the solid Fir beams and cultured stack stone to create unity with the living area. Shelving on each side of the large range provides accessible and partially hidden storage for ease of reach to the culinary enthusiast.

The homeowners desired a space where they could entertain, and this large and open area enables friends and family to gather and enjoy the space.

alair homes edmonton kitchen quartz The kitchen features a quartz countertop lit from below with a custom LED lighting panel that shines through the larger, transparent pieces of crystal. When the overhead lights are dimmed, it is an absolutely mesmerizing effect in the space.
alair homes edmonton spiral staircase The spiral staircase in this room is very special. When the homeowner’s daughter was only 3-years-old she was diagnosed with cancer. She spent a great deal of time at the Stollery Children’s Hospital and Cross Cancer Centre. When she was back home recovering from her treatment, she used the circular stairs in the former home to access the loft, which was her own little oasis.

Now older and back to good health, the daughter requested the spiral staircase in the new home. While we were unable to put the exact staircase into the new home because of height differences, we were able to build a new circular staircase that could take people from the main floor to the upper level easily while aesthetically tying to the room.

alair homes edmonton master bedroom The master bedroom boasts a barn board feature wall with wood collected from a nearby barn. And this isn’t just any barn—the wood was hand selected by the homeowner from the family farm located nearby.

The fireplace mantle is custom build from concrete and was handcrafted by the Alair team.

The floor and wall tile are all consistent throughout the room, which creates an absolutely relaxing atmosphere.
