One thing we love about our Edmonton summers is that there are so many great nights where we can grab a stick and some marshmallows, head out into the back yard, and sit around the fire pit with family or friends.

Depending on the space in your yard, there are so many options and possibilities to building or customizing a fire pit. Places like RONA have handy DIY fire pit kits to make things super simple. Or, you can get pretty elaborate and make the fire pit area a feature of your yard. The sky is truly your limit when it comes to options, but you need to know about your limitations before you get started to make sure you’re doing things safely and following the rules in your municipality.

Each municipality in the Capital Region may have different regulations and guidelines. The first thing you want to do is your research. There are great resources on the City of Edmonton website. If you’re in St. Albert, Fort Saskatchewan, Sherwood Park, Leduc or Spruce Grove, be sure to check out the respective municipality website to find out the rules and guidelines specific to your area. However, here are some of the common regulations you should expect to see.

And finally, when you have your beautiful fire pit in place, be sure to always check to make sure that there are no fire bans in place by visiting: www.albertafirebans.ca. If you have concerns that a neighbour has an unsafe or illegal fire pit, we recommend first speaking to your neighbour. If you still have concerns, you can call 311 and a bylaw officer will investigate.

Call 911 if you experience or see a fire-related emergency.
