It’s the details of a renovation that can make it extra special. A kitchen is the hardest working room in your home and it needs to have surfaces that can take the wear. But, it also needs to be stylish. When you get into the details of the renovation, you can make the space both functional and stylish.
Cabinets and Countertops
- Put your money towards cabinets, not appliances. If you have to choose, put your budget towards higher end cabinets. They will last decades when properly cared for. Appliances, on the other hand, usually last less than 10 years before they need to be replaced.
- Match your appliance side panels to your counter depth. Most countertops stick out 1/2 inch beyond the cabinet. If you have side panels that cover your refrigerator or oven, match the depth of those to the countertops, not the other cabinets.
- Choose a flush countertop for a sleek, modern look. Cabinet overhangs are not required. You can have your counters stop right at the edge of your cabinets. The look is modern and minimalist.
Pullouts and Partitions
- Add a pantry pullout, but one that is not too big. When you pull out the pantry pullout, you are hauling the weight of everything stored in it. When the pullout is too big, the weight can be too much. Go for a 9″ or 12″ pullout maximum.
- Use pullout drawers to get the most use out of deep cabinets. Things get easily lost in the backs of deep cabinets. With drawers, you can see everything with a simple tug of the handle.
- Add a pull out next to the stove for oils and sauces. Having those items close to the stove will make cooking easier and more enjoyable. There is little worry about the heat from the oven since modern appliances are well insulated.
- Partition your shelves for maximum use of the space. Top cabinets, above appliances, are great for tall pan storage or for items you use only on certain occasions. Add stand-up partitions and shelves to make the space as usable as possible.
- Add two layers of cutlery storage. A highlight of modern kitchen storage is the built-in cutlery storage. But, adding a second layer is even better. Its great for the odd items you don’t use that often.
Dishwashers and Sinks and Outlets
- Don’t put the dishwasher right next to a corner sink. It is impossible to stand at a corner sink and load the dishwasher at the same time if it is too close. Add a small base cabinet between the sink and dishwasher to separate the two.
- Match your sink to your countertop color. A stainless steel sink looks like a black hole on a white countertop. A white sink sticks out on a dark countertop. Match the tone of your sink to the countertop shade for a sleek finished look.
- Match your outlets to the color behind it. Builders love white outlets. But, they are not the only options available. You can find easily outlets to match the paint or tile color of your backsplash. Don’t forget matching outlet covers.
