I got thinking about space the other day.

Not outer space with planets and stars and spaceships. No, I was thinking about the spaces we live in; about how our surroundings can and do affect how we live. The topic has actually been studied to death.

I was thinking about my experience with many different people over the years, and how I have witnessed firsthand the direct cause and effect relationship with the space they live in. I have known people whose lives were a series of blocks and barriers. A look inside their homes revealed clutter and furniture blocking the flow from room to room. Others have complained about a lack of clarity and vision. Sure enough, they were living in a home with poor lighting, natural and built in. Add to that small windows in need of a clean with blinds and drapes always drawn. So if you’re feeling lethargic, have a look around your house; are there nooks and crannies filled with knickknacks that could use a good dusting?

The space we live in has a direct, profound effect on our lives. Getting attached to things can be comforting and soothing, but be careful that you don’t get attached to everything. At the end of the day, it is just “stuff”. If you collect too much, the quality of your space suffers and perhaps, in turn, your life. I am aware of things like Feng Shui and Chi and energy and many other beliefs. I don’t discount them or necessarily endorse any of them. I just know what I know and your space tends to define and reflect many things in your life.

We need to add it to the list – exercise, eat your vegetables, get plenty of rest and make sure that you live in good space!
