Whether your bedroom is your oasis, or simply the place you sleep, it is an important room to focus on when trying to build value into your Calgary home.
Let’s face it—when we walk into an impressive master suite, we all get a little excited. Whether it’s a show home, rental, or a friend’s house, this room can change your whole opinion of a home, and probably will have you talking about after you leave.
This feeling is often rooted in our yearning to have the best sanctuary for ourselves; a place to lay your head with comfort and pride.
MASTER ENSUITE
This is probably the key to a successful renovation of your master suite. This may include moving and/or removing walls to increase square footage in each of the three main areas—the room itself, the ensuite bathroom, and the walk-in closet).
The evolution of the ensuite bathroom has changed significantly in the last couple of decades. In some older homes, you may still find that small ensuite with simply a sink and toilet. However, homeowners today want and expect a serious and spacious suite that includes:
- Separate shower and tub
- Two sinks
- Plenty of counter space and storage
Adding these elements will help improve the value of your home.
WALK-IN CLOSET
Creating a true walk-in closet should also be on the list of must haves, but could also be downgraded to a very spacious closet if space does not permit. The best way to achieve proper space planning is to talk with a professional, and most reputable builder/renovators have a designer that specializes in space planning. Research is also a great way to DIY; visit showrooms and show homes to get a feel for what makes sense (don’t forget your tape measure) for your space.
DÉCOR
Just as important as space planning your ensuite and closet is décor, and it’s important to know you don’t need to break the bank to decorate and customize your master bedroom. However, you do need to bring the sizzle.
There are some great examples of some beautiful spaces on Houzz to help get your creative juices flowing. There is fine line between amazing and cluttered, so we recommend doing your homework and looking at as many examples as you can to find what makes sense in your home.
An interior designer is also a great reference. If you are working with a renovator/builder you can often have an interior design consult to get help with colour schemes. If you are not using an interior designer, we often recommend getting some outside feed back to ensure you have the right combinations.
The master suite is one of a select few areas of your home that can really make or break a sale, rental, or the first impression of your home.
