Although it’s August and the last thing we want to be thinking about is winter, we should consider preparing our lawn for those chilly days well before they come. Find Alair Homes Calgary lawn care tips below!

5 tips for preparing your lawn for winter

1.) Ensure in the summer/fall months that you take the time to grow a strong and weed free lawn. A lawn that is healthy will go to bed for the winter much happier and will revive much easier in the spring.

2.) Fertilize your lawn in the fall. This will strengthen your lawn’s roots and help it to thrive in the spring. A fall fertilizer should be applied between September and November depending on your local climate. In Calgary, it’s recommended to complete your fall fertilizing around late September to early October. At least before the frost hits.

3.) Aerating your lawn in mid September will help your lawn to breathe. By aerating your lawn, you will not only improve
rooting, but also increase the oxygen, water and nutrients into the soil. Aerating is done with a small machine that removes small cores out of the lawn. Although it’s quite unsightly, remember to resist the urge to rake up the cores. They help to contribute necessary nutrients to the soil.

4.) Over-seed your lawn between mid August and mid September if your lawn has damage or many bare spots. An application of fertilizer will help to fill in bare spots, but if the lawn is too damaged then over-seeding it will help significantly.

5.) Remove all leaves and debris from the lawn. This is one of the easiest and most cost effective ways to help your lawn. If the leaves are allowed to sit on the grass, they will smother it and become a breeding ground for disease. This is especially true with
new grass.
