There’s nothing that compares with excitement of moving into a new home. After all the planning, saving and preparation, actually moving in and living in that much sought after home (perhaps one from a high quality builder like Alair Homes) is a thrill that’s absolutely off the charts. What comes along with all that excitement, though, is another phase of planning what practical items are needed once you move into the house.

A little thought in advance can go a long way towards spending money wisely on the basic items for the house that serve those very necessary functions we all have to plan for. Buying items that serve multiple uses (“multi-taskers”) is an even greater way to stretch that home shopping dollar. Here are a few must-have items to shop for when the move in day approaches.

Kitchen Basics

When it comes to shopping for kitchen utensils, some of the age old basic items are the ones that will really last. Wooden spoons, a cast iron skillet, good quality pans for saucing and sautéing will give you a lot of value for your money. Stay away from gimmicky items that only serve one function. Those items can waste valuable kitchen space and money.

Dining Basics

Neutral pieces (white dishes, clear glasses, white cloth napkins) have long lasting appeal. They go great with everything and they’re easy to replace when some of them inevitably break or wear out. Also, get a basic set of flatware in a simple pattern that works for everyday use and for entertaining. You can dress up the table with a nice centerpiece when guests come by.

Bathroom Basics

Get a nice double set of towels plus one extra one for guests. Stick to an attractive color that goes well with your bathroom color scheme and you can’t miss. If some of the towels wear out, just buy a new set and throw out the old ones. This rule keeps you from taking on two many towels, and too much laundry.

Bedroom Basics

Stick to the soft, neutral rule for bedding, but be sure to buy sheets in a cotton blend or linen if possible. These sheets will last longer even if they are a bit more expensive. A coordinating throw blanket or duvet cover will dress up the bed and tie the look together.

Carefully shopping and sticking to the basics will make your home lovely and welcoming when you move in, and keep your home looking great for years to come.
