When my wife approached me with the prospect of having two dishwashers my first thoughts were “Are you sure about this? I don’t know how appealing two dishwashers will look to buyers?”

I was questioning her choice. Is this a “need” or just a “want”?

We’re in the midst of building a new home and my wife has her heart set on creating her dream kitchen, which evidently includes two dishwashers. As our family grows, we know that our new home will eventually become too small and we’ll need to look at selling it. The resale factor is something that I keep in mind when making decisions about the house.

I listen as my wife makes her case for installing two dishwashers. She stays at home with our two kids and also runs a home bakery. She cooks a lot and bakes endlessly. She runs the dishwasher at noon, and on days where she hosts play dates the sink is overflowing from dishes. We would need to do another two loads in the evening to get everything clean. With only 1 dishwasher the kitchen looks like a disaster zone.

We also like to entertain with family and friends in our home. The many delicious dishes she prepares for guests means more time in the kitchen afterwards cleaning up dishes and less time socializing.

A quick consultation with a well-respected interior designer in Victoria might solve it. She said “lots of families are doing it lately, and it is becoming more and more common”.

Pros VS Cons

But will it be one of those things that in 5 years will look horrendous? Or will it be something normal or even a must have? The jury is still out on this one. What are your thoughts?
