I’m not going to lie, it’s hard to pick just one favorite thing about my home. When my husband and I decided to make the move to Peterborough I was excited to start house shopping. After 6 months of MLS searches, which consisted of me looking pretty much every day, I came across our house. There are so many things about it that make it special. It was architecturally designed in the late 50’s by what my husband and I believe to be for people who really liked to entertain, and the layout of the house, although slightly altered from its original layout, is perfectly set up for entertainment. We love to entertain so it naturally felt like the perfect fit for us.
There are only a few elements of the house left that I believe to be original. The floors are the original hardwood, likely refinished over the years, but still in really good shape, the heating/cooling registers, which are actually wall registers are extremely retro looking and the main and only stair case railing is solid brass.
Now my favorite room/part of my house is the front entry. The front entry of the house is like a breezeway, connecting the master bedroom and en-suite, and basement stairs to the rest of the house. In this 10’x15’ corridor, I think it contains some of the coolest characteristics of the entire house:
-
The stair railing… well that just speaks for itself – solid brass. My mom probably spent atotal of 20 hours over 3 days polishing that thing after we moved in. It clearly hadn’tbeen polished or cleaned for several decades.
- The large windows that mirror each other, give the hallway a very bright and airy feelingand show off the pretty spectacular city views beyond.
-
There was an awkward alcove beside the hall closet when we moved in, not sure what iswas intended for originally, but I envisioned creating a wood storage area along withsome shelving. So that’s what we built! Having this shelving built instantly made thissection of the house feel more complete and polished.
Aside from the cool architecture features of this breezeway, it also has some of my favorite art pieces on display. Because of all the windows in our house in general, the amount of empty wall space is limited, but where there is some, it’s been filled with art pieces that have special meaning to us. Being of aboriginal decent, the native art is a nice tie to my heritage and a stately one at that! The dream catcher, although I was apposed to it at first (I thought it was scary), fits perfectly above the stairs and captures all the dreams from those sleeping in the bedrooms below. The art in this space are what help make it my favorite room.
