As summer becomes a hazy memory of beach days and cottage weekends it may not be surprising to find not all of the summer break “to do” list was checked off. Have no fear. Manitoba offers countless great activities to be had in September. Here are 4 exciting activities to put closure to your fantastic prairie summer.

Zip Line at A Maze in Corn

The maze is a classic fall activity that appeals to all ages with such a wide variety of activities. Whether a group picnic and bonfire, horse drawn hayride, a visit to the pumpkin barn, pony rides, petting zoo or giant hay bale pyramid. Of course the main attraction of completing the maze by finding the hidden hole punches to complete your challenge is the main feature but why not try the exhilarating feel of zip lining across the corn field for a new and thrilling experience.

Hike Hunt Lake Hiking Trail

For a more challenging day hike, consider Hunt Lake Trail. The trailhead is at Hunt Lake and continues north to Little Indian Bay while skirting West Hawk Lake. At 12.6 km return, this trail rewards with rugged steep climbs and bogs typical of Canadian Shield terrain. Expect majestic views of cedar and white pine trees, stunning lake views and a beaver dam.

Paddle at La Barriere Park

Why not paddle the river and enjoy La Barriere Park this fall? Just a short distance south of the city, the La Salle River has a meandering gentle flow that is perfect for beginners, families or anyone who enjoys paddling the great outdoors. Enjoy the fall colours, the sunset and of course an abundance of flora and fauna. Keep an eye out for beaver, whitetail deer, eagles, blue heron and snapping turtles.

Bike Bur Oak at Birds Hill Park

This is one of the most popular mountain biking trails at the park. Bur Oak is a 7 km dedicated single-track loop, rated moderate with a .6km loop tacked on, rated easy. Expect sharp turns, climbs, short steep down hills and some heavily rooted areas. With varying terrain and scenery, it’s a great place to sharpen your skills.

If you are adventuring on your own, be sure to tell someone where you are and when you expect to return. Review and inspect your equipment. Pack accordingly, such as, life jacket, spare tube and tire pump, long pants or socks for poison ivy, snacks, camera, bug spray, sunscreen, first aid kit and water. Enjoy and be Bear Aware!
