Mold and Rot Hiding in Your Bathroom

Small leaks in a bathroom shower can cause serious rot and mold problems. This bathroom renovation in Coquitlam started because the homeowner noticed some tiles in the shower had lost the grout integrity, and came off easily. They attempted to take some off and repair the damage they saw on the surface, but found mold underneath. Then, they had a handyman cut away more tiles and remove the backing until they realized it was a bigger problem and that they needed an expert general contractor or bathroom renovator to help solve their problem. They were referred to our Alair Homes Vancouver location and we went to work solving their rot and mold problems.

Once we demolished the shower which was connected to the tub deck, the real damage was clear; rot had eaten a hole right through the floor. This was caused mainly because of poor design and incorrect waterproofing membrane installation (not fully wrapping over deck to tub). So we replaced the rotten sub floor, checked structural members underneath for integrity, treated or removed all mold, and rebuilt a beautiful new shower. The new shower is waterproofed with Schluter system, designed with a custom half round seat and an invisible lineal drain. The drain is designed for tile to insert on top of it, so you do not see any metal grate and the floor is smooth. This method allowed us to use large format tile on floor that matched the existing flooring and flow into the rest of bathroom. Gorgeous.
