Cement Versus Acrylic Based Stucco

What some people may not realize is that there are two very different applications to this style of product. The first is a cement-based stucco. This product is probably the most commonly used application. There have been a lot of concerns about water proofing revolving around this product. While being the most affordable, cement based stucco definitely does have some down falls. This product is very rigid and has been known to crack with building settling or improper installation. When drying, there are a few things to be very aware of. Different sides of your home, or sunny or cloudy days, will change the colour tone of the cement. Even shading from a tree in your yard can alter the colour of the stucco when drying. The texture can be widely altered based on the size of aggregates used in the mix. This product has a very natural look to it which many still prefer.

Secondly is Acrylic stucco or exterior insulation finish application. This product although using the same aggregate style of cement based stucco, is very different. Acrylic stucco is a highly flexible product that has a lot of similarities to paint. It was developed to help prevent the cracking and waterproofing issue found in the other application. Further more, this product has incredible insulating properties to help with heat loss through wall cavities. The reason for this is how it is installed. Typical cement base is applied to the side of a building using a waterproofing membrane and chicken wire for structure. It uses the standard R20 in the walls as a typical insulating value. The plus with acrylic is the external insulation used. An extra 1.5’‘ of insulation is placed on the outside of the building for the acrylic to adhere to. This helps by eliminating thermal bridging through the wood members and can increase your value to up to R32. Acrylic stucco is colour fast and doesn’t fade over time. It provides deep rich colours that last. You often see cement stucco painted to have a very similar look. Unfortunately the painted product will not be durable in comparison. If stucco is your choice, then let me highly suggest the Exterior Insulation Finish Application.
