Moving into your own place is a fun and exciting experience that you will never forget. Whether you are purchasing a new home or moving into an apartment, you can count on purchasing some household necessities. Writing a list of the items you need will help you stay focused on the tasks at hand, avoiding unnecessary purchases. Moving is expensive enough, so stick to a plan to avoid an empty wallet.

Bedroom

When it comes to choosing new bedding, you will want to stick with neutral colors. White, gray, or even beige cotton sheets match seamlessly with most comforters. Accent the bedding with a cream or white colored wool throw blanket for a comforting ambiance. Avoid adding too many throw pillows that aren’t comfortable for sleeping. Remember, be practical with your selections.

Bathroom

Don’t go overboard with the towels. Two sets of towels per person should be all you need in your new household. This will also save you the hassle of washing unnecessary laundry. Avoid white towels at all costs. Although they do look pretty, they will become dingy over time. For bathroom decor, buy a toothbrush holder, soap dish, and other bathroom items in matching colors. If you want to hang a picture in your bathroom, do not hang a picture depicting another bathroom.

A household often runs on kitchen power so it is important to purchase items you will put to good use. When it comes to cooking ware and cutlery, you get what you pay for. Spending a little extra on high-quality stainless steel saucepans and a nice knife set will save money in the long run. When purchasing appliances, ask yourself, are you really going to use it often enough? A microwave and can opener generally get a lot of use, but will an ice cream machine? Probably not.

Living Room

The living room gives you the opportunity to give a good first impression of your entire home. It’s often the first room your guest will notice and spend the most time in. Since this is your first home, you might have to make due with old hand-me-downs, and that’s okay. Place furniture in a manner that makes the room look larger. Don’t clutter them against one wall. Decorate the room with tasteful wall art, an indoor plant, and perhaps an area rug to spruce things up a bit.
