Music and the Spoken Word

In a season known for music and spirituality, the First Presbyterian Church Collingwood combines the two in a festive presentation: “It’s Still the Greatest Story Ever Told.” Incorporating drama with instrumental and vocal music, these talented church members tell the story of the Nativity between December 9th and December 16th. Tickets are free but must be reserved in person.

On December 11th at 7pm, a dramatic reading of Charles Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol” will be performed at the Trinity United Methodist Church. A cast of notables will be joined by the handbell and vocal choirs to add festive music to this time-honored classic story. General admission is $20.00, the proceeds of which will be disbursed to My Friend’s House women’s shelter and the Syrian refugee relief effort.

Staying On Your Toes

Another famous composition favored at Christmastime is “The Nutcracker” ballet. On Saturday, December 12th, there will be two showings at the Fleetwood Dance Centre presented by Meaford Hall. The colorful costumes, dazzling dancers and the well-known music of Tchaikovsky come together to create an unforgettable experience for children and adults. Admission is $20 for adults and $10 for kids under 12.

Eat, Drink, and Be Artsy

Nearby Thornbury decks out for the holidays on December 12th with the annual Olde Fashioned Christmas. Featuring the New Christmas Artisan market that showcases works by local craftsmen, this event also sports an interactive family dance session, and many opportunities to create edible and inedible holiday treats. Local restaurants offer delicious fare of varying cuisines throughout the day.

Healthy Holiday Happenings

December 13th will find the hardy testing their mettle in the inaugural yearly Winter Magic Outdoor Adventure. In an effort to raise funds and awareness for the Canadian Diabetes Association, organizers plot out three different snowshoe courses based on challenge and experience. Surrounding the hike will be a holiday shopping market, a craft fair for kids, a silent auction and lunch for all.

Lots of Ho Ho Ho

The Collingwood Improv Artists will host the Wild Wing Fundraiser on December 19th to raise monies to purchase toys for chilren at My Friend’s House, a domestic violence shelter. This talented group of comedians and actors perform all over the region at theaters, business conferences and fundraising events.

December the 31st brings out the tight-knit feel and friendly spirit of the Georgian Bay community. At 7pm, the neighbors and guests come together for a glittering New Year’s Evening Out! For just $55, participants can enjoy a sumptuous three-course dinner—catered by The Kitchen owner Christine Collins—in the august Galleries at Meaford, and then dance the year away before ringing in 2016 with a champagne toast.
