Many older homes in Chilliwack were constructed with one bathroom. This is because several decades ago, the bathroom was a purely utilitarian space. In modern homes, master bedrooms typically have a private connecting bathroom. This en-suite bathroom is meant to provide a private oasis for homeowners and used for personal hygiene, general relaxation and a place to simply enjoy solitude away from the hustle and bustle of the home. Regardless of whether you have plans to build a custom home or you want to renovate your existing master bathroom, there are a few things to consider before getting started. Answer these questions to make the best use of the space available for your master bathroom.

1. Consider Enlarging Existing Space

Many en-suite bathrooms are rather large and luxurious. In fact, some may be the size of a small bedroom. They may even have a walk-in closet of an equivalent sized attached to it. If your existing bathroom is rather small or if your home was not constructed with a master bathroom, work with your general contractor to convert a neighboring bedroom or closet into an adjoining bathroom. Keep in mind that larger bathrooms may allow you to incorporate more luxurious features, such as a double vanity, a dressing area, a separate bathtub and walk-in shower. The size of your available space will, in large part, determine which amenities you can include.

2. Think Creatively for Smaller Spaces

Some home layouts are not conducive to creating a large en-suite bathroom, but this does not mean that your new bathroom cannot be luxurious. Even very small bathrooms can be creatively designed to incorporate beautiful elements and functional features. You can even add a few luxuries, such as an entertainment feature, a sound system or a heated floor.

3. Determine Your Preference for a Shower or a Tub

Depending on the amount of space available and your budget, you may need to choose between a shower and a tub. However, you may also be able to squeeze in a long, narrow tub alongside a modest sized shower. Another idea is to use a hinge screen on the shower door rather than a fitted screen if space is a factor.

4.Explore Stunning Shower Ideas

The concept of a combination shower and bathtub feature is not usually well-suited for a luxury bathroom concept. In many instances, homeowners will opt for a shower rather than bathtub when space is an issue. A shower may be used to help you maximize space in a room that has a sloping roof or other unusual design elements. Your designer may even slope the floor gently so that you can enjoy the luxury of a walk-in shower without a glass frame.

5. Make Your Tub a Focal Point

If you prefer to have a bathtub in your space, keep in mind that the tub’s design and size may make it a focal point. It should ideally have unique style or personality. For example, rather than selecting a regular rectangular bathtub, choose a clawfoot soaker tub or an elegant whirlpool tub accented by columns.

6. Select Fixtures That Are Suitable for the Space

If you are working with a very small bathroom space, large fixtures can be overwhelming in the room. They can also negatively impact functionality and prevent you from incorporating other desired features in the bathroom. On the other hand, if you choose small features in a large bathroom, the result can be underwhelming. Your designer can work with you as you select desirable features to add to your new bathroom.

7. Remember the Importance of Storage

Regardless of how large or small the bathroom is, it must have adequate storage space for your needs. Storage is necessary for towels, personal hygiene items, a hair dryer and many other items. These are not things that you want cluttering the counters in your new bathroom. In addition to cabinets, you can add behind-the-mirror storage, hanging storage features, a linen closet and more.
