Building a home might sound easy but let’s be honest, it’s a lot of work. If you’ve never built a home or gone through a renovation, then it’s really hard to grasp the amount of emotion that can be tied with either type of project. I remember going through the emotional rollercoaster myself when my wife and I built a new home four years ago. With these few helpful tips it should make your building experience a little smoother.

Plan

Make sure you take your time when you’re developing your floor plan. Most people get over excited and lose focus when they’re about to build a home. Being excited is great and by no means am I trying to downplay that however, losing focus and rushing through the planning portion of your plan can lead to mistakes and regrets later that could have been easily avoided.

Selections

Picking all of your interior finishes is very important as it brings character and personality to your home. Everyone one can pick flooring, paint, door styles and etc. but picking all those things and having them compliment one another is a different story. This is where I would suggest hiring an interior designer to help you with making these selections. An interior designer can help you focus on the look you’re going for and even help you speed up construction; if you’re selections are done before construction then you can hit the ground running.

Construction

You took your time developing the plan that suites your exact needs and now you’re building your home. Construction process of your home is where you see the plan that you have been working on for weeks start to come to life. There isn’t much you can do or change during the initial part of construction up to backfill but once the interior walls are up, make sure you walk through your home and see how it feels. If there are things you don’t like such as wall locations, spaces being too small or just want to add a niche here or plant ledges there, this is the time to do it! During the framing stage before your rough-ins go in is when you want to make any changes. You can still do them after however the costs for those same changes will drastically be higher.

Building a home is a very exciting experience and you will run into issues. However, the experience you have will be determined by how these issues are overcome and how you will remember the entire project.
