As 2019 introduces itself, many of us think to the year ahead and what we want it to hold for us – in health, at work and also for our home. Are you thinking about some large improvements and changes to your home this year?

If so, Alair Homes Aurora would love to assist you in any way we can, perhaps for an in-home consultation to get you started and learn more about your project (always complimentary by the way)!

We often get asked, what’s the best way to prepare for a large-scale renovation? …. is it even possible to prepare or is it best just to jump right in?  Here’s what we recommend:

Dream Big

If you could have everything you want, what would it be?

What would you include?

What features would you seek out?

What special appliance or technology would you incorporate?

Once we know the HUGE picture, we can always scale back to fit your budget or scope, but if you don’t dream big, how do you know what you really want?

Think Budget

What would you like to spend on this new home investment?  Be realistic and think about what you are gaining, how your life will change and improve, the benefits, and the cost of the project relative to your home value.  If you are planning to stay in your home for the next few years and you are updating wisely, remember that the dollars that you spend will come back to you in enjoyment and investment.

Look Around

Do you know anyone that has done a similar project recently?

What do you like (or not like) about how they approached their changes?

Popular websites like houzz.com, houseandhome.com, remodelista.com, and dwell.com are great resources to search and save any projects that pique your interest or that remind you of what you would love your home to look like. These inspiration pictures will come in handy for sharing with a builder and/or designer to assist in explaining what you want to achieve and the styles that you gravitate to.

Start Early

It’s never too early to begin the process of preparing for a renovation.  Builders get busy. If you want your project to be done in a timely fashion and completed for a specific date you have in mind,  make those contacts sooner rather than later. The sooner you engage a builder or contractor and get the ball rolling, the sooner they can get your home in their schedule to avoid any disappointment.  Creating your design, applying for permits and getting proper quotations are a crucial part of the overall process; these items need to take place before any construction can begin and do add time to the project schedule.

Assemble Your Team

Your home holds a special place in your heart and is a huge investment; you want reputable professionals and a team of individuals you can trust.  We recommend interviewing a number of contractors and builders – ask questions, learn about their process and warranties, and how they will lead and support you throughout this critical time. You can judge what companies and individuals are reputable, have legitimate and incredible references, and most importantly, who you feel most comfortable working with.
