When it comes to investing in home renovations, sometimes it’s the smaller renovations that have the biggest impact. For example. owners of smaller homes often need more storage space than is available to them. In the case of a small home, it often requires a bit of imagination and creativity in order to add more storage space – more often than not, you’re simply not going to have the space to build another closet or to buy another dresser. The following are nine unique ways that you can add storage space to your small home:
- Recessed kitchen shelves – If you tend to entertain guests on a regular basis, then you’ve probably struggled to find a place to keep your liquor where it is both out of the way and easily accessible at the same time. One of the solutions that we came up with at Alair Homes, which was featured on Houzz, was to use recessed kitchen shelves, which we installed in a small nook in one of our kitchen designs. The shelves are only one bottle deep, but provide plenty of space to display your collection of liquors while providing instant access for pouring. We even added a metal grille over our recessed shelves to give it an additional visual flourish.
- Doorway shelving – Build shelves that flank your doorways and that sit above them as well. The space around the doorway often goes unused, so why not use it for additional storage space? Use them to store more decorative items that you don’t need easy access to.
- Door storage – The door can be used as storage space in itself as well. For example, in the children’s room, you can hang baskets up on the door in order to store extra toys. You could even hang up pre-packed travel bags for your kids.
- Mug hooks – Instead of taking up cabinet space for your coffee mugs, install hooks under one of your cabinets to hold all of your mugs for instant access.
- Underside shelf hooks – If you’ve got any shelves up in your kitchen, then attaching hooks to the underside is a great way to get additional use out of them. You could use them to hang your pots and pans, thereby clearing up more cabinet space and making it much easier to find that one pan that you’re always rummaging around for.
- Extend cabinets to the ceiling – Many cabinets and shelving units don’t go all the way up to the ceiling. Instead of wasting the space between the top of your cabinets and the ceiling, use it to extend your cabinets to provide additional storage for items you don’t need access to on a regular basis.
- Install high shelves – The top part of your walls often goes unused, so throw up some shelves in order to store little read books and collectible display items.
- Install wall boxes – Wall boxes can be easily removed and transported since you can attach them to the wall without damaging them. They also make the interior design of a space look much more elegant than typical shelving units. Not only can you store items within the box shelves, but you can display them on top as well.
- Use a clothing rail – If you’ve got more clothes than you know what to do with and don’t have the room for a bulky armoire, then suspend a rail from the ceiling on which you can hang your clothing.
