Summer, it’s the best time of the year if you are between the ages of 5 and 14. If you have kids in this age group…it is a test of patience. For some reason kids hate school all year long and talk about how boring it is, yet once school is out they lay around the house like slugs whining about how bored they are and how there is nothing to do. Next time they complain, here are a few family fun ideas that will keep everyone busy until school is back in session.

Go for a bike ride

For me growing up, I lived on my bike during the summers. The bike ride itself wasn’t as important as the adventures and activities that I would find after I got on my bike and left the yard. I would usually run into other kids on their bikes and the day would fly by then it would seem all of a sudden it was time to go home for supper.

Go to a skateboard park

As extreme sports became recognized as a good thing more and more local skateboard and bicycle parks started popping up. Most communities have one nearby and they provide hours of distraction and fun.

Go swimming or go to the beach

On those especially hot days, going to a pool or to the beach was always great way to spend the day. The beach is usually free and most public pools don’t cost more than $15 for a family of 4 for the entire day.

Have a lemonade stand

This is great for younger kids as they get to learn about business and how much fun making a bit of money can be.

Go to the museum

The museum is a great place to go on rainy days or if the A/C is broken. They are usually provincially funded so there is no admission fee and a little bit of educational entertainment isn’t a bad idea to help keep the kids brains from going to mush while on summer break.
