Clutter and disorganized spaces are part of many of our day to day lives. While many of us simply “live with it”, the ideal time to make some changes is when you are moving into your new Nanaimo home. By putting just a few systems in place from the get go, you can start out feeling organized and stay that way in the long run too.

Labeling

Some home organizers simply cannot live without their label maker. They label everything from canisters of sugar to cinnamon in the spice drawer and even which drawer their pots and pans belongs in. While there is certainly such a thing as going overboard with labels, in a few instances, using them makes a lot of sense.

If you tend to store spices in your kitchen cabinets, labeling each container makes it both faster and easier to grab exactly what you want come dinnertime. Similarly, if your pantry contains a variety of things that look a lot alike such as flour, cornstarch and baking soda, labeled canisters sure do come in handy. There are tons of ways you can get your labels, and whether you choose to purchase them ready made online, print them yourself from a home computer, use a handy label maker or simply grab a roll of scotch tape and a sharpie, they will help make it easier to get your space organized and keep it that way.

Entryway Organization

The entryway to your home is a space that often gets cluttered quickly. When everyone simply takes off their boots and jacket or throws their backpack and purse on the ground, your clean, open and airy entryway can quickly turn into a junk pile that simply does not make for an enticing front area of your home.

Get organized by purchasing an entryway landing zone. This might be a simple shelving system purchased at a big box store or it could be a custom designed bench, hook and cubby combination built by your favorite Nanaimo general contractor. The main point is to create something where everything has a place, and when your family enters the home, their stuff goes in the appropriate spot each time. This will also make it easier for you to find stuff when you’re rushing out the door such as your keys, wallet, purse or favorite pair of shoes.

Giveaway Zone

As you are moving in to your Nanaimo home, there’s a high possibility you will find a lot of stuff that you want to give away. As your kids outgrow their clothes or age out of their toys, the giveaway pile will grow, and it can quickly take over your house.

To prevent this, keep a couple of bins, baskets or large totes near the garage or an exit to the home, and assign that as your giveaway zone. When something is ready to move on to charity or your local yard sale, place it in the bin. Make a habit of emptying your bin about once a month, sending the things off to a new home where they can be used once again.

When moving to your new Nanaimo home, say goodbye to the endless clutter that often consumes so many homeowners’ lives. By putting a few organization systems into place early, you’ll get off on the right foot, keeping your home cleaner and your family less stressed too.
