When constructing your home, make sure that it is not in the middle of, or near forested land. Homes located close to forested land are at a higher risk of experiencing wildfires. Also see to it that there is a source of emergency water supply, such a fire hydrant, within 1000 feet of your home – this is the only way fire crews can help even if the unthinkable happens. Besides this, here are a few things you can do to protect your home from wildfires.

Remove everything inflammable

Chop away all dry grass, and remove piles of dry leaves from near your home. The same applies to chopped timber as well. At least 30 feet of open space should be there around your home.

Secure vent openings

Sometimes, embers fly in through these tiniest of openings and cause fires to start from within the house.

Roofs and sidings

The embers can also land on the roof and set it aflame – so when constructing your home, make sure it isn’t made of wood. Neither should sidings. There are plenty of alternative fire-resistant building materials available for both roofs and sidings these days. A-class roofs have been tested and shown to be fire-resistant.

Safer Windows

Embers can also come in through windows. Fire-resistant material should be used for curtains. It also makes sense to have smaller windows than larger ones – windows can break, and one small window broken still lets in less fire than a large window. Despite your best efforts, it is possible that wildfires could still ravage your home, even if located in an urban area. This is how best you can defend your home when there are wildfires raging around you.

Dress in protective clothing

Nylon can melt at high temperatures and cause burns, so this is best avoided.

Fill your bathtub with water

Also keep buckets of water handy to put out any spot fires inside or outside your home.

Connect hoses to working taps

Spraying your property with water dampens it and makes it less likely to catch fire. Keep them connected even after you have done this – you never know when you are going to need them.
