Alair Homes

Spring has arrived and with it comes the desire to freshen things up, start anew and get creative. From simplistic projects that only take an hour or two to adventurous endeavors that might cost you an entire weekend, here’s a list of some fun things you can do in your home to capture the warmth, life and vibrancy of spring.

Updating Outdated Pots

If you’ve got some outdated terracotta pots sitting in your garage, give them a makeover with two coats of paint. Pick similar shades of blues and greens for a beach themed design, or go crazy with funky bright reds and oranges to make your old pots pop. Simply tape off one part of the pot, paint the other and allow it to dry. Then, tape the other half and add your second color to the first area, where you’ve removed the tape.

For a really fun change, use chalkboard paint. Once it dries, you can label the pots with what’s inside, a favorite word or short quote or anything else you would like. This works beautifully for a small herb garden in your kitchen or to create multi-colored pots to line the steps leading up to your front door.

Patterned Accent Walls

Painters tape isn’t just for taping off edges and keeping your baseboards clean. For a fun new take on an accent wall, paint the entire wall one single shade, and then tape off a pattern across it, painting again in the hue of your choice. Once the tape is removed, you’ll reveal your pattern.
If you find that lines aren’t perfectly clean once you remove the tape, give all the paint a chance to dry. Once that’s done, use a pencil to draw clean lines, and take a small paint brush and fill in.

Kitchen Art

If you are looking for something to do with all the tissue paper you’ve collected from spring birthday parties, save it and make small collage artwork. Simply layer the tissue paper inside a frame and atop heavyweight paper to create unique designs. A little glue mixed with water between the layers will keep them laying flat. Once complete, your artwork is ready to hang. This is a great project to do with the kids and makes for a wonderful gift for aunts and grandmas too.

A New Look for Box Shelves

If you have knickknacks that you like to display in your home, you’ve probably got a box shelf or two hanging on your walls. To give them a fresh new look, paint the backs with the shade of your choice. Alternately, decorate the backs with some colorful wallpaper or even contact paper to transform simple shelves into a focal point all their own.

Organize the Pantry

Everyone loves an organized kitchen. It makes cooking a lot more fun and can also save you money at the grocery store since you’ll reduce instances of buying products you already have at home. To get your pantry organized, first remove everything inside. Clean the shelves well, and only return items that are in date and you plan to use. When returning them, organize items by category into bins, wire or plastic baskets. Label each basket with the category (i.e.: breakfast, baking, meat seasonings, vegetable seasonings, snacks, spices, etc.) to make it easier to find exactly what you need every time you prepare a meal.

Outdoor Living Spaces

While you’re taking on household projects, don’t forget your outdoor living space. To give it a festive look, string lights over your deck or patio area. Hang them high enough for your tallest friends to walk beneath, and make sure they are safely plugged into an approved electrical outlet.

Our ideas might make your spring to-do list grow just a little larger, but give a few of them a try. You will have fun incorporating them into your home, and the results will certainly be something that you are proud of.
