Between 1998 and 2005, a billion square feet of storage space was created in America and in 2009, it was a $22 Billion a year industry. While the focus recently has been on downsizing and minimalism, there is just only so much you can get rid of and still live comfortably. It is possible, however, to get rid of the extra storage unit you pay for every month and find clever and creative ways of storing extra or seasonal stuff right in your own home – where it’s handy and convenient for taking out and putting away. Tiny houses are the ninja masters of clever storage. Here are 5 great ideas to borrow from tiny houses.

Retractable Bed

1970’s apartments in New York City became famous for their retractable beds to create daytime space in small studio apartments that weren’t much bigger than the bed itself. Many tiny home dwellers that don’t like loft beds use retractable beds instead or even as a guest bed. With a retractable bed, you can turn an office into a guest room without giving up valuable floor space when you are using it as an office, or turn a playroom into a nap room in a snap.

Under Stair Storage

Stairs contain a great deal of unused space beneath them, so why not use it for storage? Built custom cabinetry under your stairs, for quick, convenient easy access to seasonal decorations, sports equipment or even hats and coats.

Coffee Table/ Bench Storage

Tables are another basic staple in every home that take up space, but are ripe for mining hidden storage potential. Benches in a breakfast nook are also perfect for use as a storage area and a custom built window seat can also be a cover for a large storage area. Finding clever ways to hide large storage areas is the hallmark of tiny home designers.

Pull outs

Sometimes great storage ideas are not about creating more storage but utilizing pieces that keep you from needing it in the first place. Instead of buying a table with numerous leaves that have to be stored away somewhere when not in use, buy (or build!) a table that uses pullouts that conveniently slide right back into the table when not in use. Instead of needing storage for cutting boards, install pullouts right under your counter or even in a butcher block. Not only do they provide a great place for cutting, but they also provide extra work space when you’re preparing a large meal or have numerous people working in the kitchen.

Fold downs

Similar to pull outs, fold downs keep you from having to store extra tables for when you have company. If you want a bar to set drinks on, or to serve food from buffet style at a party, install a fold down and just raise it up when you need it and fold it down when you are done.
